The programme of studies focuses on the applications of analysis and testing in an industrial environment, as well as good laboratory practices and total quality management, all with particular focus on the pharmaceutical industry. The programme also deals with pharmacology, toxicology and pharmacognosy, and through an appreciation of the global pharmaceutical industry, gives insight into the R&D process, regulatory affairs, pharmaceutical process technology, good scientific practice and the role of the Qualified Person (QP).

a degree in Science with Chemistry as a main area of study obtained with Second Class (Honours) or better or
a degree in Pharmacy obtained with Second Class (Honours) or better or
a degree obtained with Second Class (Honours) or better in an area of study that is deemed relevant by the Board.

Applicants with a degree in Science with Chemistry as a main area of study obtained with Third Class (Honours) may be admitted if they show evidence of significant experience in work relevant to the area of study of the Course obtained after their first cycle degree.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Science in Applied Chemistry - M.Sc. Appl. Chem. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Science.

By the end of the programme, you will:

Gain insight on research and development of originator and generic medicinal product development.
Possess an overview of the actions and uses of medicinal products in clinical practice and the manufacturing of medicinal products.
Understand spectrophotometric, spectroscopic, photometric and chromatographic techniques.
Understand the formulation and processing conditions employed in the manufacture of medicinal products, together with the effects of these parameters on medicinal product safety, quality and efficacy.
Demonstrate a critical understanding of the theoretical perspectives in your chosen area of study.
Report and discuss the results of your research in a clear, structured and concise form.

As a holder of the M.Sc. in Applied Chemistry, you will be able to enter a career as an analytical chemist, production chemist, laboratory supervisor, chemical engineering, teacher and researcher.
